How To Style Your Sofa

I often get asked how to put cushions on a sofa and my first response is always the same - just don't over think it, any cushions are better than no cushions. But there are a few tips I can share to help bring your sofa to life:
 

• Odd Cushion Numbers:  It is always a good idea to have an uneven number of cushions - the exact number of course will depend on the size of the sofa. An average three to four seat sofa can take up to 5 cushions (men everywhere are fainting!) -  3 on one end and 2 on the other. 
   

• Mix It Up: Have some fun with the cushions and mix colours, patterns and even shapes. Pick up a colour in your rug or your artwork and bring it to life with your cushions. As long as there is a story to tie them to the room then they will look great within the space.
   

• Feather Inserts. Always: I have a pet-peeve for fibre inserts. They really can make even the most elegant sofa look a little “shabby!” By choosing a feather insert it can make an Ikea sofa look a million dollars! If your cushion comes with a fibre insert, just take a quick trip to Ikea or Spotlight pick up some feather inserts (under $15) and switch out the fibre ones.  You will notice a huge difference in both look and comfort.
