How to Style Your Bedroom

Your bedroom is your sanctuary in your home. It is the one room you walk into when you want to block out the rest of the world and spend some time to yourself.

Given the importance of your bedroom, it is clear that the right design for this space is imperative. Your design scheme is a crucial part of creating a relaxing, calming oasis for you to retreat into. However, knowing where to start with this can be a challenge.

If you’re feeling stuck when it comes to planning your bedroom design, here are some tips that you can keep in mind.

Choose a Subtle Colour

Bold, primary colours can make a room seem loud. Instead, choose subtler shades when it comes to choosing the paint for your walls. Soothing, gentle hues and a monochromatic palette can help create a calm and serene atmosphere. You can also opt for richer jewel tones if you’re looking to emphasise the cosiness and comfort of your bedroom.

Keep Accent Colours in Mind

While gentle colours can help to create a result space, some pops of brighter shades are required to touch of liveliness in your bedroom. One way to do this is by using a bright hue when choosing an accent colour.

This accent colour can be used to create a small feature wall or can be brought out through your soft furnishings in other to add a pop of bright colour without overwhelming the room. You can also combine brilliant colours and patterns to create some more visual interest.

Don’t Forget the Ceiling

Most people spend time decorating the walls of their room with the perfect balance of furniture, soft furnishings, and art pieces. However, when doing so, they often forget the fifth wall in the room – the ceiling.

When you lie back in bed, you will be looking right at your ceiling, and the last thing you want is to be staring at a blank, bland space. When it comes to your ceiling, don’t forget to paint it as well as your walls. One way to distinguish your ceiling from the other walls is by choosing a light shade of the paint you use for your walls and adding a subtle pattern to help catch your eye.

You can also add architectural elements like beams, mouldings, and more. You can tie your ceiling to the rest of your bedroom with the help of a canopied or tented bed that also serves to create a comfortable oasis for you to relax in. Another way to add interest to your ceiling is to choose attractive and unique light fixtures like a chandelier instead of simple recessed lighting.

Keep Your Bedroom Simple

One pitfall that many people fall into is trying to cram too much into their bedroom. However, your bedroom is meant to be a space where you can truly relax.

Make sure that you only have minimal furniture so that you can move around in your space. To make movement easy, ensure that there is at least three feet between your bed at the walls. There should also be enough space between your bed and any other large pieces of furniture like couches and chairs. You should also ensure space between your bed and your dresser so you don’t stumble and hurt yourself getting out of bed in the morning.

Don’t try to fill your bedroom with as much furniture as possible. Ensure that there is enough sitting space for you and your partner and space for your belongings, but anything more than that, and you risk a cluttered space. Furthermore, if there is too much sitting space in your room, you may find that other people in the house want to spend time there instead of in common areas.

Similarly, keep the accessories to a minimum. While it can be tempting to display every sentimental memento you have collected, and all your favourite artwork, too much and the room feels too busy. One way to display everything you want without crowding the space is to keep rotating pieces. Choose one or art pieces of artwork to display on your walls and change every few months, for example. This also helps create a dynamic, ever-changing bedroom that you won’t find yourself getting bored of anytime soon!
